James Smith has consistently supported Obamacare, despite serious questions over the healthcare law’s constitutionality and resulting in higher health insurance costs for regular Americans.
In March 2013, Smith proposed and voted in support of an amendment to an appropriations bill to expand South Carolina’s Medicaid program under Obamacare.[1]
A few years later, even after the devastating effects of Obamacare were being felt across the country, Smith doubled down on his support. In April 2017, Smith again proposed and voted in support of an amendment to an appropriations bill to expand South Carolina’s Medicaid program to adults and families with income at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level.[2] In March 2017, Smith supported an amendment that would have opted out of provisions of The American Health Care Act and preserved “Obamacare by preventing the law’s provisions from being eliminated in the event congress passes a repeal and replace measure.”[3]
